In the NoThingness

What I Found in the NoThingness

As I tried to change my Facebook cover this morning, something went – well – seemingly, wrong. I was trying to post something profound and comforting in response to the 911 anniversary, and my Cover went completely black. An error message came up, and both my previous photo and the ones I was trying to add were gone. I was using my phone to access my page, and nothing seemed to work. My FB cover would show Nothing until I was able to get to my computer and an internet connection.

However, it was in this apparent mishap that something profound was actually revealed to me. While my FB Cover was showing Nothing, I realized that it is in the NoThingness that we find the SomeThingness that makes all the difference. The Truth is, there is no statement, no picture, no words to convey that make sense of what happened here in the US on 911. But in the NoThingness, we find the SomeThingness, the All-ness that makes sense of EveryThing. We find our connection with our Source, the Essence of Life that breathes us into existence.

Life, in its wholeness and in its Source is eternal; growing, multiplying, and being continuously fruitful. In our humanness, wholeness is not always what we see, or feel, or express. Attached to the things of life more than that which breathes life into existence, many experiences seem fruitless, pointless, and even downright evil. But in the NoThingness, the Breath of Life appears, and suddenly, there is no separation between you, and me, and all that is. In the NoThingness, we find the SomeThingness that makes sense of EveryThing.

Once this Truth was revealed to me, I was able to post the quote I had planned for my FB Cover this morning.

“May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may my thoughts, words, and actions contribute in some way to happiness and freedom for all.”

~ Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu

Although the words do not make sense of the nonsensical, nor do they replace the sense of security that was lost that day, they do tell us the consciousness we need to hold to make our world a place that more fully expresses the All-ness that gives us life. This is the consciousness that will help us co-create a world that works for and honors the SomeThingness in All.

More Precious Than Jewels In You

more precious than jewels.1200“More precious than jewels,” is the noble woman according to the Book of Proverbs.  But, in a previous chapter, the same writer tells us that “Wisdom” is more precious than jewels.  Wisdom, also named Sophia in ancient texts, is the feminine aspect of the Divine, so desiring to know God that she gave birth to humankind.  She is the Divine Mother, whispering pearls of wisdom and often personified by the mother figures and nurturers in our lives.

Mothers, indeed are often the voice of Pearls of Wisdom.  I know my mother had her favorites. “”When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” Mom’s teaching of resilience and persistence.  “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” Mom’s teaching of looking past appearances for a deeper meaning.  And, “Two wrongs don’t make a right,” Mom’s way of calling me to a higher action.

The mother figures in our lives as well as the mother essence in us, calls us to a higher action. Jesus’ mother was known to call him to action too.  You may recall the Wedding Feast at Cana when Mary informs Jesus that the couple has run out of wine.  Jesus replies, “What is that to me?”  sounding a bit like a rebellious teenager wondering why this should be his problem.  But there is another way to hear these words, “What is that to ME?  What is a little thing like running out of wine to me? What is that to the Christ, the anointed one?”

When something appears to be lacking, or slips in the back door of our consciousness, disturbing our peace what could we learn by responding with those words?  What is that to me?  What is that to the highest and best in me.  What is that to what is most precious in me? What is that to the Christ in me?

Something came up for me recently, something slid in the back door of my consciousness. It was one of those comments that causes you to feel judged, tempts you to become defensive, to attack, to blame, to shame.  And so I asked “What is that to me?” What is that bringing up for me?  Is it bringing up that I’m somehow less than perfect?  Is it bringing up a need to change another’s perception of me?  And, what is that to the Christ in me? What is that to what Truly is perfect in me? And how can responding to this differently, from the place in me more precious than jewels make a difference? How can I be transformed by this and what would that look like? What would Love do here? What would Light do? What would a new thought, a new response and a new action do? Well that would change everything because it would change me and my own perception and I would see something much greater at work.

Would this change another person’s perception. Maybe. Maybe not. But when we let Light shine through us, and stand fully in our Christ self, we are so changed that the world around us begins to shift.  This is what is called to action by what is more precious than jewels in you.  The apostle Paul summed it up best with these words “Christ in you, your hope of Glory.”

Star of Wonder

bright red flashIn this wondrous time of year, we witness the wonders of the first snow fall, of holiday lights and decorations, the glitter, the activity of giving, the excitement of children as they anticipate visits from Santa and extra days off from school. We hear the sounds of familiar carols playing in stores and churches and on car radios. And perhaps we hear these familiar words, “Star of Wonder, Star of Night, … guide us to thy perfect Light.” It is a song describing the journey of the Magi following a great and mysterious Light to the birth of the Christ, a sacred and glorious event in the story of humankind.

The Star of Wonder is more however than the guiding light to one mystical event in the history of humankind. It is also a symbol of the continuing story of birthing the Christ in us. The Star of Wonder is the Light that rises in our consciousness, even in the midst of what appears to be darkness, guiding us to the birth of the Christ Mind in us.

The true Wonder of this sacred and mystical story is not the star at all. It is not the Wise Men. It is not even the gifts that they bring. The true wonder is the light in you that rises in your consciousness and leads you to the sacred space in you that awakens the Christ in you. It is the Light in you that awakens you to the gifts already in your treasure chest. It is the Light in you that guides you to placing your life and your spiritual gifts under the care and guidance of the Christ in you.

The Wonder of this story is made manifest when we make all of our inner resources, the gifts of God within us, open to the Christ Mind by asking, “What would the Christ in me do? What would the Christ in me have me be?” The true Wonder of this story has always been the “… Christ in you, your hope of glory.” (Col. 1:27)

MOVEMENT: A Miraculous Activity

dominoes-ccc-21496317363_a2a99d7fcf_mMOVEMENT is the activity of continuous motion, miraculously at work at all times.  Nothing is ever not moving. Nothing is ever truly static.  Though it may seem at times that nothing is happening, we are breathing, the planet we stand upon is moving, the universe is continuously expanding, everything in fact is moving all of the time.  That this occurs is more fact than miracle but the awareness of MOVEMENT in what seems to be static is miraculous indeed.  When it seems that nothing will change, that the things of the world are too big, too cumbersome, outside of our control; we would do well to tune into this activity, for it is Spirit that continuously moves through us.  Stepping into an awareness of the movement of Spirit within us reminds us that there is no “thing” more powerful than the power of God within us.  Remembering that everything is always in motion reminds us that change, evolution and transcendence are always at hand.  It reminds us that all things of matter are transient, impermanent. What is permanent and unchanging is God and our awareness of our oneness in the Source of all that lives, moves and has being. That is powerful and miraculous indeed.

The Breath of God

breath-cc-16193758604_c24b91a8cc_mBREATH, the air that is inhaled and exhaled is evidence of the miraculous interconnectedness of all life.  The BREATH I hold in this moment, is the breath you exhaled only moments before.  The BREATH I release will soon be held be another.  BREATH and Spirit are synonymous, both having the same meaning and origins.  The first BREATH is the BREATH of God and we each continue to draw in and release the original BREATH.  We are one with God, one with all that is, in a continuous exchange of the invisible substance of Spirit.  God BREATHES through me and God BREATHES through you.  BREATH is Spirit moving, creating, blessing, cleansing, renewing and revitalizing.  This is a miracle of Life and all I have to do to experience it is BREATHE.

Sacred Text or Sacred Portal?

bible-cc-6385742691_7c3b002bcf_qThe BIBLE is a sacred text with miraculous qualities that are often missed when focused only on the words on the page.  The miracle of the BIBLE is that the Word of God permeates every copy, every edition, every version in a way that transcends the translation errors, the political manipulations of the text, and even the consciousness of its human authors.  You see, the “Word” is not the words on the page. It never has been.  Rather it is the very Idea in the Mind of God that reaches through the text to the mind and heart of those who read it with the pure intention to commune with God.  The mistake that is often made is to believe that another can tell you the absolute meaning of a passage.  Although this can be very helpful, and there are those with great wisdom who connect with God through their own readings, the Truest message from God comes through when one sets the intention to be with God and allow the “Word” that is without syllables, translation, or text to be transmitted in their heart.

A Positive Side of Fear?

fear-cc-2406378075_568feb9133_q-jpgFEAR is not usually considered a miracle.  Yet, FEAR has two very different sides or characteristics.  There is the FEAR generated by the ego and fueled by outer conditions, past experiences and the collective stream of FEAR consciousness. This FEAR is destructive, immobilizing and is a very long way from what one might consider a miracle.  But there is another side to FEAR.  FEAR in its intended expression is the voice of inner guidance, intuition.  It is a higher awareness calling out and keeping us from walking into the path of an approaching train or speeding vehicle.  This FEAR moves us gently out of harm’s way and reminds us to seek inner guidance.  It reminds us that we are never alone and that peace and harmony are just one thought, one dimension away.  This FEAR reminds us to close our eyes to appearances, close our ears to resounding gongs and clanging symbols, and seek the shelter of Divine Love where wisdom speaks with clarity, harmony and oneness.

EVOLUTION

cc-evolutionSome would say that EVOLUTION is not a miracle; it’s just the nature of things.  Some might even be opposed to the concept of EVOLUTION as it challenges their religious beliefs. But in Truth, EVOLUTION is not only a miracle, EVOLUTION IS God.  God is the One Power, One Presence, One Activity of the universe.  God is Omnipotence, All-Power.  Without the Activity of EVOLUTION, life would be stagnant, unchanging, not alive. God is Life itself, infinitely moving, breathing, unfolding in and through all that we call creation.  EVOLUTION is the miracle of God continuously renewing Life.

A Miracle A Day, Day 84

toilet.cc.8801986560_173fa40664_z (1)TOILETS are another miracle of human ingenuity.  We have discovered a way to utilize the natural resource of water to wash away … well, “you know what.”  Metaphysically, we can appreciate TOILETS as the ability to flush away the “you know what” from our minds.  And, the ability to flush what is no longer useful in our minds or our lives is a miracle indeed.  But further, hold on to your hats here; God speaks to me through TOILETS!  OK, not a mysterious deep voice coming up through the plumbing, but in a subtler way.  The most dramatic episode of this occurred during my ministerial studies when I was asked to give the Sunday sermon while my minister was away.  Having worked with youth for many years I got excited about the idea of bringing the metaphysics of Oz to the adult congregation.  But then, a bunch of “you know what” started to gather in my mind.  What if they think it’s too childish of a message? What if they don’t get it?  What if I’m not good enough to pull this off?  Maybe the Wizard of Oz is just not the right theme?”  Well, as God would have it, I was still working in the secular world as a graphic artist running backstage PowerPoint presentations at large scale business meetings.  The week before I was to give the talk I traveled to Las Vegas for one of these conferences.  As I entered the hotel where the meeting was to be held, the background music playing was “If I Only Had a Brain.”  The hotel was the MGM Grand, and the way to our conference room just happened to sport a yellow-brick road.  Well, I began to gather God was assuring me my topic was just fine.  But as I entered my room later that evening there were still remnants of doubt pooling around in my head.  As I entered the bathroom, I noticed the TOILET.  Remember the TOILETS?  The brand stamped on the back of the toilet was, you guessed it, Toto!  That seriously flushed away any doubt still lingering within me.  And so, believe it or not, TOILETS are a miracle and God uses them to speak to me.

A Miracle A Day, Day 82

idea.cc.7650740066_bb5e4ea62b_qIDEAS spark possibilities.  They are a miracle of the mind.  IDEAS, like dreams, access the power of imagination.  IDEAS are constantly connecting us to the divine and bringing the future into the present moment.  An IDEA is a thought that sparks a new way of being or a new way of doing something.  For an IDEA to take hold it is vital that the old way of doing, thinking or being is released.  Without that act of release, the IDEA has no room to peak through or take form. IDEAS are miracles continuously popping into our minds, inspiring us to create something greater than the current experience. God once had an IDEA.  It was an IDEA of a world in perfect balance, populated with spiritual beings that would have creative IDEAS themselves, IDEAS that would be fruitful and multiply.   Open the space for a new IDEA.  Honor the new IDEA of another.  Work together to try new IDEAS and begin to manifest an entirely new way of being.  Right now, this very moment, someone has a better IDEA of how the world can become a thriving, fruitful place that works for all.  Perhaps, we can join together and release the way things have always been to make room for the Divine IDEAS that will carry us to the next phase of spiritual evolution.
